Here’s another little trade secret: Laura Mercier Cake Liner. Using just a small amount of this eyeliner each day will open your eyes up to a whole new world.
By applying this liner to your lash line, you will drastically open the look of your eyes. Follow my steps below and your eyes will appear wider than they actually are. Really. I’ve seen it myself.
If you don’t believe me, use your eyeliner pencil to line just one eye and then compare the lined and the unlined eye. A note to consider: to keep this look all day, know that your regular eyeliner pencil WILL NOT stand the test of time.
A flat eyeliner brush is the best applicator for cake liner (reference the brush pictured above).
As you can see, the eyeliner closely resembles eyeshadow. Just add enough water to the cake liner to get the consistency of shoe polish (note: please don’t use she polish on your eyes…just kidding, sort of). Then use the very top of the brush to apply the wet liner to the underside of your eyelashes. Follow your lash line from the outer corner of the eye to the inner most lash. Give it a few seconds to dry and you’re good to go!
Cake liner isn’t exactly cheap ($22), but it will certainly last you a long time — (A). It’s dry (B). You’re only using a little each day.
This is Laura Mercier’s signature look. Other makeup designers have come up with similar cake liners (Bobbi Brown, Benefit), but I like LM’s the best. Compare prices and products and see what works best for you!
*LM products can be found at Sephora, Bloomingdale’s or Nordstrom.
When you say the “underside of your eyelashes” do you mean the very edge of the lid, nearest the eye? And if so, why the underside and not the topside like everyone usually does? Very curious!
Hey Katie! Thanks for the post. And yes, you’re correct. By underside I mean the part of the lid closest to your eye (the part you need to lift your lid to really get to). Using the cake liner on the underside isn’t a replacement for the liner you put on the top of your lid, but an addition to. While liner on the top of your lid makes your eye “pop,” liner on the underside of the lashline actually makes your eye look wider than it really is. It’s just a technique to make your beautiful eyes stand out more! I hope this helps and let me know if you need anymore help with it. I can look into a tutorial š
How about lower lids?
One tip to live by: do not, and I repeat, DO NOT put liner on both the top and bottom lids! Doing this will make your eyes appear smaller. Choose one or the other and stick with it…I tend to go with the top because you can be more creative (generally, I go with a 50s-esque liner-style…just my preference).
